Transversal section

   
  Diffuse-porous. Pores generally solitary, uniform in size over entire growth ring, relatively widely spaced. Growth ring boundaries somewhat undulating. Fibres thick-walled. Diffuse apotracheal, rarely paratracheal parenchyma.
 
 

Radial section

   
  Scalariform perforation plates generally with more than 20 bars. Heterogeneous, multiseriate rays with one to many rows of upright marginal cells, uniseriate rays predominantly composed from square to upright cells. In the vessels numerous transition forms from bordered pits to scalariform perforations occur. Fibre-tracheids present.
 
 

Tangential section

   
  Rays generally 3- to 5-, rarely 5- to 7-seriate, frequently uniseriate rays. Wide rays occasionally with sheath cells. Ray height: 10 to 50 cells.
 
 

Key characters

   
  Diffuse-porous. Pores solitary. Scalariform perforation plates. Heterogeneous rays.
 
 

Remarks

   
  The wood of the two species Cornus mas and Cornus sanguinea usually cannot be differentiated on the basis of wood anatomy.
