  Diffuse-porous to semi-ring-porous. Numerous small, generally solitary pores. Growth ring boundaries distinct, marked by 2 to 4 rows of thick-walled, radially flattened fibres. Parenchyma apotracheal, sparse.
 
 

Radial section

   
  Simple perforation plates. Distinct spiral thickenings in vessel and fibre-tracheids. Rays homogeneous to weakly heterogeneous, often bordered by a row of square marginal cells. Fibre-tracheids and libriform fibres present.
 
 

Tangential section

   
  Rays uniseriate. Average ray height: 5 to 15 cells.
 
 

Key characters

   
  Diffuse-porous, numerous small pores. Simple perforation plates. Uniseriate homogeneous (to slightly heterogeneous) rays. Spiral thickenings.
 
 

Remarks

   
  The wood of the two species E. europaeus and E. latifolius cannot be differentiated on the basis of their wood anatomy.
