Picea abies Karsten

Common Spruce, Norway Spruce

Pinaceae

Transversal section

Gradual transition between earlywood and latewood. Resin canals bordered by 8 to 12 or more thick-walled epthelial cells.

Radial section

Longitudinal tracheids generally with uniseriate, rarely biseriate pits. Rays heterocellular. Ray tracheids present, with smooth walls. Thick walls of ray parenchyma, nodular tangential walls. Generally piceoid pits in the cross fields (especially in latewood), in parts cupressoid.

Tangential section

Average ray height 10 to 15 cells, rarely up to 25 cells. Resin canals with thick-walled epithelial cells.

Key characters

Resin canals present. Transition from earlywood to latewood is gradual. Generally uniseriate bordered pits in the radial section of tracheids.

Remarks

The differentiation of Picea and Larix by wood anatomic characteristics is not always possible. In Larix the transition from earlywood to latewood is abrupt and the biseriate bordered pits appear often over relatively long areas in the radial section of tracheids.
