Prunus padus L.

Stone Fruit: Bird Cherry

Rosaceae

Transversal section

Diffuse- to semi-ring-porous wood. Pores solitary and in radial pore multiples and pore clusters. Growth ring boundaries distinct, marked by abrupt transition in pore size from latewood to earlywood. Fibres in ground tissue almost exclusively thickwalled. Gum deposits in heartwood vessels. Diffuse apotracheal parenchyma.

Radial section

Simple perforation plates. Spiral thickenings, typically widely spaced. Uniseriate rays generally square to upright cells, multiseriate rays slightly heterogeneous, often square ray cells. Distinct spiral thickenings in vessels. Ground tissue composed of libriform fibres.

Tangential section

Rays generally bi- to 4-seriate, often uniseriate, rarely wider than 5- to 6-seriate. Average height of multiseriate rays: 15 to 30, often much more cells.

Key characters

Semi-ring- to diffuse-porous. Pore clusters. Simple perforation plates. Rays uniseriate and bi- to 7-seriate, heterogeneous. Spiral thickenings.
