Transversal section

Diffuse-porous. Pores can hardly be differentiated from axial and ray parenchyma: all cells are similar in size and shape. For this reason, growth ring boundaries and rays rather indistinct. Fibres very thick-walled, generally in small groups, forming indistinct oblique to tangential bands.

Radial section

Simple perforation plates. Rays only composed of upright cells. Ray cells in size and shape often scarcely different from axial parenchyma cells. Vessel pits slit-like, horizontal. Libriform fibres and vascular tracheids present, no fibre-tracheids. Occasionally rhombic crystals and crystal druses present.

Tangential section

Uni- to triseriate rays, seldom wider. Ray cells axial-oval. Parenchyma occasionally fusiform, storied together with the vessel elements.

Key characters

Vessels, parenchyma and growth ring boundaries indistinct. Vessels and parenchyma storied.
